A college football fan's beer sign on national TV has raised more than $1 million for University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, according to CNN.

Iowa State fan Carson King traveled to the Sept. 14 University of Iowa-Iowa State game, where he hoped to crowdfund a case of beer at ESPN's "College GameDay" in Ames, Iowa, The Washington Post reported. Mr. King's sign read, "Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished ~Venmo~ Carson-King-25."

The 24-year-old told CNN he "didn't think I would make anything; it all started as a joke," but he raised $400 in the first half hour and will continue to raise money until the end of the month.

With matching donations from Venmo and Busch, Mr. King's now raised more than $1 million and plans to give the money, minus money for the case of beer, to the children's hospital, according to the Post.

The hospital praised those who donated on social media.

"What a week! We are overwhelmed by all of your generosity, and our hearts are full," Stead Family Children's Hospital tweeted Sept. 20.
