Ohio hospital's Medicare contract in jeopardy

Sequel Pomegranate, an acute care hospital and psychiatric facility in Columbus, Ohio, is taking steps to keep its Medicare contract after CMS threatened to pull its funding, according to WBNS.

CMS cited the facility earlier this year for patient safety issues, including failing to conduct physical assessments of some patients after an assault or injury and failing to conduct suicide risk assessments on patients within the first eight hours of being admitted, according to letters obtained by WBNS.

Sequel Pomegranate submitted a correction plan to CMS, and findings from a follow-up survey will determine if the facility keeps its Medicare contract.

"Sequel Pomegranate submitted a plan of correction to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and they have already conducted another site visit to resurvey the facility," a spokesperson said in a statement to WBNS. "Based on that visit, we fully expect to receive the written findings from CMS stating that we are back in substantial compliance. Our priority and focus continues to be on ensuring we provide outstanding care and services to the youth we serve."

Most hospitals correct deficiencies before their Medicare funding is terminated.
