Ohio bill would force hospitals to give upfront service estimates

Kelly Gooch -

An Ohio bill aims to improve transparency of hospital costs, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Senate Bill 97 cleared the state Senate Oct. 9 and now goes for a vote in the state House.

Under the bill, hospitals would be required to provide a "reasonable, good faith" estimate or price range of scheduled services at patients' request at least seven days before service, the Dispatch reported. Hospitals would have to tell if the patient should expect separate bills and if an out-of-network bill is possible.

The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Steve Huffman, would take effect July 1, 2021.
