New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System saw its revenue and net income rise in the six months ended June 30, but the system ended the period with lower operating income, according to recently released financial documents.

Ochsner's operating revenue totaled $1.82 billion for the first six months of 2019. That's up 12.7 percent compared to $1.61 billion in the same period of 2018. The boost was partly attributed to organic growth as well as more patient referrals from affiliates and outlying facilities.

After factoring in expenses, which climbed 13 percent year over year, Ochsner ended the first six months of 2019 with operating income of $39.4 million. That's down 0.7 percent from the same period a year prior, when the system reported operating income of $39.7 million.

Ochsner ended the first half of 2019 with net income of $99.5 million, r including a $60.1 million nonoperating gain. The system reported net income of $40.5 million and a nonoperating gain of $805 million in the first six months of 2018.
