NJ hospital faces closure, local leaders warn

Morgan Haefner -

Local elected officials speculate Bayonne (N.J.) Medical Center is at risk of being sold and closed, according to ABC affiliate WABC-TV.

Bayonne Medical, owned by Jersey City, N.J.-based CarePoint Health, could be sold to RWJBarnabas Health in West Orange, N.J. Officials warn if Bayonne Medical is sold, it could face closure.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis told WABC-TV: "My message to CarePoint and RWJBarnabas is simple: If you want to close our hospital, you're going to have to come through me. Bayonne Medical Center has been a pillar of our community for a hundred years, and the people of Bayonne must have a full-service hospital in our city. Anything less than that is unacceptable."

In response to the speculation, RWJBarnabas said it "will comment further if and when there is more information to share." CarePoint told the publication it is "in the process of seeking a strategic partnership with another health system for its hospitals" and "hope[s] to announce something in the near future."
