New York hospital sues patients over medical bills

Kelly Gooch -

Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital is increasingly filing debt-collection complaints against patients in civil court, according to The Post-Star.

The newspaper reported that the hospital sent summonses to nine patients in January and February, and 26 had been summoned since June 1.

The 26 patients are slated to meet with a mediator to try to resolve debt issues with the hospital.

Some patients contend they received bills in error, according to The Post-Star.

In March, the hospital said that it had settled with Cerner over losses it sustained during two years of problems with Cerner's billing system.

At least one patient speculated in a court response that his bill from 2018 could have been sent in error due to the billing problems, The Post-Star reported.

Tracy Mills, vice president of planning at the hospital, told the newspaper Glen Falls will "work with all patients to establish manageable payment plans."
