New York hospital loses $600k in August as employee insurance costs rise

Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital said four cases cost the 50-bed acute care hospital $100,000 in self-insured employee health benefits last month, North County Now reports.

The costs contributed to the hospital's $635,669 loss in August, as did lower-than-expected inpatient volumes and higher state retirement payments.

Massena Memorial Hospital CFO Patrick Facteau told North County Now the hospital paid out $500,000 more this year toward its employer health plan than last year due to the four cases.

Year-to-date, the hospital is $1.3 million in the red.
