Nearly half of US consumers interested in health price comparison tools

Kelly Gooch -

Many U.S. consumers are interested in using tools to compare pricing and for patient reviews, according to a new report from Deloitte.

The report was based on a 2018 online survey of 4,530 U.S. adults as well as a 2019 survey of adults in seven additional countries: Australia (4,079 participants), Canada (4,039 participants), Denmark (2,023 participants), Germany (3,625 participants), the Netherlands (2,014 participants), the United Kingdom (4,165 participants), and Singapore (2,014 participants).

Three findings:

1. Forty-nine percent of surveyed U.S. adults said they would likely use a website that offers a pricing tool that could help them to compare prices for services and treatments offered by specific physicians and hospitals. That compares to 45 percent of Singapore respondents, 37 percent of Australia respondents and 28 percent of Germany respondents.

2. Fifty-three percent of surveyed U.S. adults said they would likely use a website that offers quality rankings, satisfaction ratings and patient reviews for specific physicians and hospitals. That compares to 42 percent of Singapore respondents, 41 percent of Canada respondents and 38 percent of Germany respondents.

3. Half of surveyed U.S. adults said they would likely use a website that offers user reviews, effectiveness ratings and safety information for specific healthcare products, medications and medical devices. That compares to 41 percent of Singapore respondents, 39 percent of Canada respondents and 34 percent of Australia respondents.
