Alia Paavola -

New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System received a $10 million gift from Emily and Len Blavatnik, to establish an institute dedicated to women's health research.

The donation will create the Blavatnik Family Women's Health Research Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The institute will focus its research on ovarian and endometrial cancers, postpartum depression, pregnancy-related deaths and severe maternal complications.

Elizabeth Howell, MD, vice chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai, will be the founding director of the women's health institute.

"Len and Emily are longtime advocates for women's health whose generous philanthropic commitment will significantly strengthen Mount Sinai’s research program while positioning us as a leader in the field," said Michael Brodman, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai.
