Mount Sinai could close more facilities amid Beth Israel lawsuit

A delayed closure of New York City-based Mount Sinai's Beth Israel could force the system to close "other MSBI facilities."

While the specific facilities were not listed, Loren Rigelhaupt, a spokesperson for Mount Sinai, said in a Jan. 11 statement shared with Becker's that the system is losing around $500,000 to $600,000 per day and has lost more than $1 billion over the last ten years keeping the facility open.

"We have been raising the alarms for nearly a year over the growing urgency of the financial situation of Mount Sinai Beth Israel," he said. "[We] will continue down this destructive path until the court grants our long-pending closure motion, which is fully supported by the Department of Health."

The hospital, which initially shared plans to close in September 2023, received conditional approval from the New York Department of Health to close the hospital in late July 2024 after fighting a lawsuit from the Community Coalition to Save Beth Israel Hospital and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. However, a judge later granted the coalition a temporary restraining order to prevent closure in August.

In a Dec. 16 letter to Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Pearlman, a representative for Mount Sinai detailed how other "important healthcare enterprises that are part of the MSBI system" were in jeopardy, including the Rivington Behavioral Health Center, Mount Sinai Brooklyn, Union Square clinics, Blavatnik Family Cancer Center "and more." All of the facilities are located throughout New York City.

Becker's has reached out to an attorney for the Community Coalition to Save Beth Israel Hospital and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and will update this story should more information become available.
