Los Angeles-based Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital received two pledges totaling $15 million from the Weingart Foundation and Ballmer Group to help mitigate physician shortages.

The gifts — $7.5 million from the Weingart Foundation, founded by philanthropists Ben and Stella Weingart, and $7.5 million from the Ballmer Group, founded by Microsoft CEO and Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and his wife, Connie — will be allocated to MLK Community Medical Group, a physician group established by hospital leaders in 2016. The funds will help the physician group attract talent to the area.

"Thanks to the Weingart Foundation and Ballmer Group's bold investments, we can create a healthcare delivery system that will transform the lives of all of our community members in South [Los Angeles], "said Elaine Batchlor, MD, CEO of Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital.
