Kaufman Hall: Hospital profitability, volumes trending up year over year

Hospitals saw profitability improve in September 2019 compared to the same period last year, with expenses trending down, according to a report from consulting firm Kaufman Hall.

Analysts noted while the profitability is encouraging, it remains largely tied to volume and fee-for-service payments. Should value over volume take its place on a wider scale, hospitals will see negative consequences, according to the report.

Overall, most hospitals saw volumes increase year over year. Operating room volumes grew the most, with minutes up 5.7 percent in September of this year compared to last.

Revenue per unit was also up year over year in September, according to the report. Additionally, hospitals nationwide saw year-over-year declines in bad debt and charity care in September.

Results varied when viewed on a month-to-month basis. To read more, click here.
