Investment losses hit Duke University Health System's bottom line

Duke University Health System reported higher revenues in the six months ended Dec. 31 than in the same period of the year prior, but the Durham, N.C.-based health system ended the period with a net loss, according to recently released unaudited financial documents.

Four things to know:

1. Duke University Health System reported revenues of $1.9 billion in the first two quarters of fiscal 2019, up slightly from $1.8 billion in the same period a year earlier.

2. The health system's expenses climbed 5.6 percent year over year to $1.7 billion in the first half of fiscal 2019.

3. Duke University Health System ended the first two quarters of the current fiscal year with operating income of $146.1 million, up from $123.1 million in the same period of fiscal 2018.

4. After factoring in nonoperating items, including a $61 million loss on investments, Duke University Health System ended the first two quarters of fiscal 2019 with net income of $89.8 million. The system reported net income of $262.3 million in the first half of fiscal 2018.
