Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine has received approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to construct a new hospital on an existing campus in Lake Forest, Ill.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, and the new hospital — which will include 114 private inpatient beds and eight operating rooms — is expected to open in 2017. The new facility will aim to create a patient-centered experience and adapt as healthcare evolves, offering high-quality, cost-effective care, according to a news release.

The new hospital is the first phase of a redevelopment project involving the Lake Forest campus. The campus will also undergo a redesign involving linked walking and biking trails and a new common area for community activity, according to the release.

"We are pleased to have this approval which is a significant step forward for construction to start this fall," said Thomas J. McAfee, president of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, in the release. "Our new hospital and redesigned campus will be a destination for health, wellness and community enjoyment for the people of Lake County and will provide our patients with access to quality care, medical experts and exceptional service as well as a seamless pathway to Northwestern Medicine specialty care."
