Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health System saved more than $1.4 million last year through its numerous green initiatives, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.
The system saved at least $1.4 million last year by cutting its electricity usage by 10 percent. The system cut it usage by using more efficient LED lights and converting to variable frequency air conditioning units, according to the report.
Beaumont has also made changes to help cut back on its water usage, such as updating its boiler room.
The system has saved about $3 million in the last three years by cutting electricity and water usage.
The heath system also has a number of recycling projects, which save the system about $100,000 per year in landfill costs.
Beaumont Health is part of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, which encourages hospitals to create a more sustainable business model by reducing energy and water usage, choosing safer and less toxic products, recycling and serving healthier food, according to the report.
