How CHS, LifePoint, UHS, Tenet and HCA fared in Q4

Major for-profit hospital operators produced mixed financial results in the fourth quarter of 2016.

1. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems recorded operating revenues of $4.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016, down 6.9 percent from revenues of $4.8 billion in the same period of the year prior. The company's net loss widened from $83 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 to $220 million in the fourth quarter of last year.

2. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Holdings' revenues increased 3.8 percent year over year to $10.64 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016. HCA ended the fourth quarter of last year with net income of $920 million, up 58 percent from $582 million in the same period of the year prior.

3. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health recorded revenues of $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016, up 17.1 percent from revenues of $1.4 billion in the same period of 2015. LifePoint reported net income of $46.6 million in the fourth quarter of last year, down 16.1 percent from net income of $55.4 million in the same period of 2015.

4. Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare recorded revenues of $4.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016, down 3.3 percent from revenues of $5 billion in the same period of the year prior. The company's net loss narrowed from $97 million in the fourth quarter of 2015 to $79 million in the fourth quarter of last year.

5. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services' revenues increased 6.9 percent year over year to $2.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016. UHS reported net income of $174.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2016, up less than 1 percent from $173.7 million in the same period of 2015.
