Hospital executives seek customizable integrated practice management, RCM and EHR systems, survey finds

Kelly Gooch -

As hospitals acquire medical practices, merging various types of physician technology platforms is a goal, according to Black Book's annual practice management satisfaction survey.

The survey of more than 3,000 U.S. hospital-owned or employed physician practice organizations found 36 percent of respondents seek customized integrated practice management, revenue cycle management and EHR systems.

Four other findings:

1. Forty percent of large hospital system respondents said their organizations plan to replace multiple existing medical practice systems with integrated ambulatory technologies that merge with the hospital's EHR and RCM systems by the last quarter of 2020.

2. Most integrated delivery network executives (85 percent) said they believe the alignment of hospital and physician IT provides solutions amid value-based care challenges.

3. Most hospital executive respondents (89 percent) said nonintegrated EHR and current practice management systems fail to allow leaders to strategically design alternative reimbursement and payment methodologies aimed at improving physician engagement and patient care.

4. Hospital-owned and employed physician practices on an integrated EHR, practice management, RCM platform collect more on billed charges than independent practice physicians with nonintegrated or unconnected EHR RCM platforms — 29 percent more, on average.
