Henry Ford Health System posts $27.8M surplus

Ayla Ellison -

Nonprofit Henry Ford Health System, a six-hospital network based in Detroit, posted a $27.8 million net surplus on $4.7 billion in revenue in fiscal 2014, a significant improvement from the system's $12 million deficit on $4.5 billion in revenue in 2013.

The system saw its expenses increase to $4.6 billion in fiscal 2014, up from $4.5 billion the year prior. Henry Ford's supply costs grew to $613.6 million in fiscal 2014, up from $554.3 million in 2013.

The system's return to surplus was largely attributable to an increase in its net patient service revenue in fiscal 2014. However, like many other system's, including Downers Grove, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care and Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, Henry Ford's surplus was offset by its investments taking a hit in 2014.
