Healthcare Share of GDP Drops to 17.4%

Staff -

Government benchmark data revisions show the health share of the economy has dropped from 18 percent to an average of 17. 4 percent post-recession, according to the Altarum Institute.

Additionally, the Altarum Institute estimates the health share of the gross domestic product was 17.5 percent in June 2013. Higher GDP estimates are largely responsible for the declining health share, according to the institute. The government benchmark data revisions take place once every five years.

On top of the GDP share dropping, healthcare prices had a 12-month moving average growth rate of 1.6 percent as of July 2013, a new low according to Altarum Institute data. Healthcare spending growth averaged 4.1 percent in the first half of 2013, barely above record-low levels recorded annually since 2009.
