Health Savings Accounts Grow to $15.5B in 2012

The number of health savings accounts grew 22 percent in 2012 to more than 8.2 million, and total assets within them grew 27 percent to $15.5 billion in the same year, according to a report by Devenir, a Minneapolis-based financial consulting firm.

The report compiled data between Dec. 31, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2012, from the top 50 HSA providers, estimating $13.2 billion was contributed to those accounts in total during 2012. Investment assets from HSAs grew 55 percent year-over-year, reaching an estimated $1.7 billion.
