HCA, CHS may feel a pinch from Hurricane Michael

Ayla Ellison -

Some of the nation's largest for-profit hospital operators are working to limit damage from Hurricane Michael, according to CNBC.

Among the nation's major for-profit hospital operators, Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare has the most hospitals in the path of Hurricane Michael. About 5 percent of HCA's acute care beds are in the storm's path. HCA is followed by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, which has about 4 percent of its beds in the storm's path.

In 2017, damage from hurricanes Irma and Harvey cost HCA an estimated $140 million, and CHS suffered $40 million in losses due to the storms.

"At this point the earnings risk from Michael seems significantly lower, though many hospital companies had facilities in the path of Hurricane Florence in September as well," Evercore ISI analyst Michael Newshel said in a research report released Oct. 9.
