Hahnemann University Hospital's financial challenges and planned closure: a timeline

Hahnemann University Hospital, a 496-bed academic medical center in Philadelphia, has made headlines in recent months amid the facility's financial challenges and planned closure.

While Hahnemann is preparing to close in September, hospital workers, local leaders and others have called for efforts to stop the closure.

A timeline of Hahnemann's financial struggles and closure plans reported by Becker's Hospital Review since April 1:

April. American Academic Health System, which owns Hahnemann, reveals the hospital is losing $3 million to $5 million a month and may have to close.

April 4. Plans announced for the hospital to lay off 175 nurses, support staff and managers as it struggles to keep its doors open.

April.  American Academic Health System CEO Joel Freedman says a "pathway to stability" for the hospital will require help from the government, insurers and its academic partner, Philadelphia-based Drexel University.

June 21. Drexel University files a lawsuit to block American Academic Health System from closing Hahnemann.

June 25. A Philadelphia judge rejects Drexel's request.

June 26. American Academic Health System announces the hospital is slated to close in early September.

June 27.  About 200 hospital employees come together at Philadelphia City Hall in efforts to save the hospital.

June 27. The Pennsylvania Department of Health orders the owners of Hahnemann to not move toward shutting down until state regulators receive and sign off on a closure plan.

July 1. Hahnemann files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

July 10. A Philadelphia Common Pleas judge grants part of a preliminary injunction request sought by Philadelphia officials to stop the hospital from closing without a plan authorized by the state.

July 11. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney issue a news release stating that the hospital closure is driven by greed.

July 12. The hospital's maternity ward ceases operations.
