Geisinger lays off 47 amid restructuring

Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health has laid off 47 employees from its IT department, pennlive.com reported June 4.

The layoffs are part of a restructuring plan that aims to offset high labor and supply costs.

"We must find ways to operate more efficiently while maintaining our high standards for quality care and service," the health system said in a statement shared with Becker's. "As healthcare continues to evolve through technology and innovation, we must also continue to evolve our workforce."

Geisinger said department restructurings such as this occur periodically and that the layoffs are not related to its pending acquisition by Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, according to ABC affiliate WNEP.
