Financial updates from Cleveland Clinic, BJC HealthCare & 3 other systems

The following five hospitals and health systems recently released their financial statements for 2016. 

1. Cleveland Clinic's revenues increased about 12 percent year over year, from $7.2 billion in 2015 to $8 billion last year. After factoring in expenses, Cleveland Clinic ended 2016 with operating income of $139.3 million, down 71 percent from operating income of $480.2 million in the year prior. 

2. Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health, the parent company of insurer Highmark and Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, recorded revenues of $18.2 billion in 2016, up 3 percent from revenues of $17.7 billion in the year prior. Highmark Health ended last year with operating income of $64 million, up from an operating loss of $565 million in 2015.

3. New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's revenues increased 8.3 percent year over year to nearly $4 billion in 2016. The cancer center ended 2016 with operating income of $178.2 million, up from $169.2 million in 2015.

4. Indiana University Health reported revenues of $6.2 billion in 2016, up from revenues of $6.1 billion in the year prior. The Indianapolis-based system posted operating income of $548 million last year, down 29.9 percent from operating income of $781.8 million in 2015.

5. St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare recorded revenues of $4.8 billion in 2016, up 11.8 percent from revenues of $4.3 billion in 2015. BJC's operating income fell to $141.8 million in 2016, a 30 percent decrease from $202.3 million in 2015.
