Financial updates from 11 health systems

The following 11 health systems and for-profit hospital operators recently released their financial statements for the three-month period that ended June 30.

1. BJC HealthCare's operating income surges 37.3% in Q2
St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare reported revenue of $2.1 billion in the second quarter of fiscal year 2015, which ended June 30, up from revenue of $2 billion in the same period of last year. BJC reported operating income of $126.3 million for the second quarter of FY 2015, up 37.3 percent from the comparable period of last year.

2. Orlando Health operating income jumps 151%
Orlando (Fla.) Health reported revenue of $594.8 million for the three-month period that ended June 30, up from revenue of $524 million in the comparable period of last year. The system reported operating income of $70.8 million for the three-month period, up 151 percent from $28.3 million in the same period a year ago.

3. CHS revenue grows while admissions slump: 5 things to know
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a profit of $111 million on $4.9 billion in revenue for the second quarter of FY 2015, up from a profit of $42 million on $4.8 billion in revenue for the same period of last year.

4. Tenet Q2 profits take $61 million hit, but per-share earnings top estimates
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare reported a net loss of $61 million on $4.5 billion in revenue for the second quarter of FY 2015. The for-profit hospital operator posted a net loss of $26 million on $4 billion in revenue in the second quarter of FY 2014.

5. UHS net income grows on higher admissions: 5 key points
King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported a profit of $182.2 million on $2.3 billion in revenue for the second quarter of FY 2015, up from a profit of $151.7 million on $2.1 billion in revenue for the same period of last year.

6. LifePoint benefits from acquisitions, gets 21.3% boost in revenue
Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health reported a profit of $46.4 million on $1.3 billion in revenue for the second quarter of FY 2015. The for-profit hospital operator posted a profit of $39.1 million on $1.1 billion in revenue in the second quarter of FY 2014.

7. HCA beats Q2 expectations in profits, revenue and admissions
Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America reported a profit of $507 million on $9.9 billion in revenue in the second quarter of FY 2015. The for-profit hospital operator posted a profit of $483 million on $9.2 billion in revenue in the same period of last year.

8. Kaiser's operating income grows to $760M in Q2
Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals reported combined operating revenue of $15.3 billion for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015, up from operating revenue of $14 billion in the same period of last year. Kaiser reported operating income of $760 million for the three-month period that ended June 30, up from $652 million for the same period a year ago.

9. NorthShore's operating income climbs 7.5%, net surplus plummets 47%
Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem reported revenue of $492.6 million for the three-month period that ended June 30, up from $484.4 million for the same period of 2014. The system ended the second quarter with operating income of $37.2 million, up from $34.6 million in the same period of last year.

10. Partners HealthCare rebounds in Q3, still faces financial pressure
Boston-based Partners HealthCare reported revenue of $2.9 billion in the third quarter of FY 2015, up from revenue of $2.8 billion in the comparable period of 2014. The system reported operating income of $29.8 million in the third quarter, up from a $34.5 million loss in the same period of last year.

11. Allina Health operating income soars 61.9% in Q2
Minneapolis-based Allina Health reported revenue of $940 million for the second quarter of FY 2015, up from revenue of $873.5 million for the same period of 2014. The system reported operating income of nearly $44 million for the second quarter of FY 2015, up 61.9 percent from operating income of $27.2 million for the same period a year ago.
