Nonprofit hospitals and healthcare systems in the U.S. and Canada received a total of $11.7 billion dollars in fiscal year 2016, an increase of $63 million from fiscal year 2015, according to the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy's annual report.

The annual survey of gifts, pledges and grants reveals that in the U.S. alone, funds to healthcare organizations increased by 5 percent to a total of $10.1 billion.

"During this time of unprecedented change in health care, extraordinary giving is so important to the care we provide to our communities every day…  [it is] encouraging because these dollars translate into life-saving technology, promising new research and the best possible care for our patient " said Mark Larkin, AHP's board member and president of the Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital Foundation.
