Could spending $100B end the pandemic in the US? NYT says that might cover it

The U.S. would need to spend more than $100 billion in rapid tests, antiviral treatments and masks to end the COVID-19 pandemic, The New York Times‘ Dealbook newsletter estimates, based on insights from several healthcare experts.

Below is a breakdown of the COVID-19 resources needed and the estimated cost, according to the report:

  • Buying rapid tests for each American to test once a day for the next six months would cost $60 billion.
  • If the infection pace stays constant, the U.S. may see 26 million cases in the next six months. But experts say that could rise. With the prediction that the number could double to 50 million cases and each infected person receives $530 worth of antiviral medicine, the cost of treatment is estimated at $27 billion.
  • If each American received two KN95 masks a week throughout the next six months, the total would be $17 billion. If the count would exclude some Americans, like infants, the cost would be $10 billion.

There are some caveats to these numbers, as they don’t include other measures like vaccination sites or manufacturing mishaps, the report said.
