CMS Updates ICD-10 General Equivalence Mappings

Staff -

Based on stakeholder feedback, CMS has updated the general equivalence mappings for translating data between the ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding systems in 2014.

The GEM updates for 2014 include closer ICD-10 matches for ICD-9 codes for various procedures and conditions ranging from substance abuse treatment counseling to gout. CMS has added entries for new fiscal year 2014 codes, revised codes to better meet inclusion criteria and expanded cluster translations for completeness.

CMS will release reimbursement mappings for 2014 in October. ICD-10 will go into effect on Oct. 1, 2014.
