CMS Places End Date on Kentucky Health Plan’s Exclusive Medicaid Contract

Passport Health Plan, a Louisville-based HMO sponsored by several Kentucky hospitals and physicians, will lose its exclusive contract to provide Medicaid coverage to the 170,000 people in a 16-county region by 2013, according to a Courier-Journal report.

CMS sent a letter to Kentucky state officials saying the state’s contract with Passport will be extended until Dec. 31, 2012, but after that, the state must expand its model for more choices for Medicaid beneficiaries.

CMS did not want Passport to be the sole Medicaid provider in the region, and starting in 2013, it will have to compete with other managed care plans, according to the report.

CoventryCares of Kentucky, Kentucky Spirit Health Plan and WellCare of Kentucky handle the Medicaid managed care plans in the other 104 counties in the state.
