Clinical documentation improvement a top priority for hospitals, survey finds

Kelly Gooch -

Hospitals are increasingly implementing clinical documentation improvement technologies, according to a Black Book survey.

The survey of 2,920 healthcare leaders found about 25 percent of respondents said their organizations outsource at least some CDI technologies. And 65 percent of respondents from hospitals with more than 200 beds now outsource CDI audit, review and programming, up from 24 percent in 2015.

"The need for proper clinical documentation improvement driving quality outcome scores has never been more essential," said Doug Brown, managing partner of Black Book.

Hospitals that have implemented CDI technologies are achieving successful results, according to the survey.

In the third quarter of 2018, 91 percent of respondents from organizations with more than 150 beds, and which currently outsource CDI technologies, reported significant increases (a minimum of $2.1 million) in appropriate revenue and proper reimbursements.
