Children's Hospital Los Angeles receives anonymous $20M donation

Children's Hospital Los Angeles received a $20 million gift from an anonymous donor to expand its emergency department, the health system announced July 10.

Officials said they plan to use the funds to expand the Maurice Marciano Family Foundation Emergency Department and Trauma Center's waiting room, construct 11 new patient bays, and purchase EMR monitors and a new MRI machine to be used across the hospital.

The ED, which opened in 2011, was constructed to accommodate 65,000 patient visits per year. However, the department has since been operating beyond capacity, managing nearly 100,000 patient visits annually.

Officials said they expect to begin construction on the new ED later this year.

"We are filled with gratitude by the generosity of this transformative gift," Children's Hospital Los Angeles President and CEO Paul S. Viviano said in the hospital's July 10 statement. "With demand for services growing every year, we will be able to make needed enhancements to continue providing transformative, family-centered care for the children and families who depend on us."
