Canadian man dies on Florida road trip, family drives to border to avoid US hospital bills

Emily Rappleye -

When Canadian border patrol stopped the Drapeau family March 31 after a Florida road trip, they found a body in the backseat of their minivan, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

The dead man, 88-year-old Fernand Drapeau, appeared to have died of a heart attack on the road, but his wife and son kept driving to avoid checking in to an American hospital, according to the report. Mr. Drapeau was hospitalized in Florida in December and his high medical bills deterred the family from seeking care at another U.S. hospital.

The mother and son, of Quebec, were interviewed by police but have not been charged.
