California hospital weighs closure of nursing facility

Kelly Gooch -

Sonoma (Calif.) Valley Hospital is examining whether to close its 27-bed skilled nursing facility, according to a Sonoma Index-Tribune report.

The hospital's board has launched an eight-member task force to study the issue. The task force — chaired by board member Jane Hirsch — will find financial improvement methods or recommend closure, according to the report.

The task force is slated to give an interim update Oct. 4.

"As a board we understand how serious this decision is, and we look forward to hearing from the community and the task force," board Chairman Joshua Rymer told the Index-Tribune.

The 75-bed hospital, part of the Sonoma Valley Hospital District, has been seeking ways to reduce costs. In July, the hospital announced it will close its obstetrics department.
