California health system lost $135M since start of COVID-19 pandemic

Visalia, Calif.-based Kaweah Health has lost $135 million between the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and October 2022, The Business Journal reported April 4.

Since the start of the fiscal year in July 2022, the hospital has lost $43 million, including $3.5 million in February. Kaweah received $61 million in funding aid that helped cover the losses.

In January, the health system cut 94 jobs. If Gov. Gavin Newsom approves a $1.5 billion line item in the fiscal year 2024 budget, the hospital could receive $75 million, according to CEO Gary Herbst.
