Dallas-based Steward Health Care closed St. Luke's Medical Center in Phoenix on Nov. 24.
Four things to know:
1. Officials said the hospital closed due to dwindling patient volumes. St. Luke's Medical Center's occupancy rate remained below 40 percent over the past two years, President James Flinn wrote in a letterto the local community last month.
2. When St. Luke's closed, 655 employees lost their jobs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice.
3. Steward is looking for opportunities to transfer St. Luke's employees to similar positions at Tempe (Ariz.) St. Luke's Hospital, Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz., and Florence (Ariz.) Hospital, a spokesperson for Steward told Becker's Hospital Review.
4. With St. Luke's closed, Steward still operates more than 35 hospitals across nine states.
