AMA: Deficit Reduction Must Include Repeal of Sustainable Growth Rate

Staff -
The American Medical Association supported the component of President Barack Obama's deficit proposal that would include a repeal of the Medicare sustainable growth rate formula, according to an AMA news release.

The AMA said the nation should not assume $300 billion in Medicare physician cuts, the release said. If Congress is not able to reach a deal, Medicare physician fees would be reduced by 29.5 percent starting on Jan. 1, 2012.

Additionally, the AMA said it will continue to work with Congress and President Obama's administration to include a full repeal of the SGR.
