Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network ended 2017 with operating income of $31.1 million, which was a significant improvement from the $32.6 million operating loss the health system recorded the year prior, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

AHN reported revenue of $3.07 billion in 2017, up nearly 8 percent from revenue of $2.8 billion in 2016. The health system's expenses rose 5 percent year over year to $3.04 billion in 2017.

After factoring in nonoperating gains, the health system ended 2017 with net income of $51.1 million. That's compared to a net loss of $40 million in 2016. This is the first time AHN has reported positive full-year earnings, according to the Tribune-Review.

AHN is a seven-hospital system and is a subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health.
