A coding tip for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Kelly Gooch -

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical coding training and certification association AAPC is reminding practices to ensure coding is up to date for Medicare mammograms.

The reminder comes via a Sept. 30 blog post written by Barbara Aubry, RN, AAPC fellow and senior regulatory analyst for 3M Health Information Systems.

In the post, Ms. Aubry notes  ICD-10-CM coding updates for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1,  and ending Sept. 30, 2020. Among the new codes are:

  • N63.15   Unspecified lump in the right breast, overlapping quadrants
  • N63.25   Unspecified lump in the left breast, overlapping quadrants

"Although these codes apply to diagnostic mammograms, be sure to review CMS' National Coverage Determination for Mammograms (220.4) prior to coding," Ms. Aubry added. "CMS has made multiple changes to the NCD 220.4, since its inception. It is important to monitor CMS publications for NCD changes to be able to access the latest version that often includes important coding updates. Your Medicare administrative contractor's website is a good location for update announcements."
