7 Recent Issues Between Hospitals and Payors

Here are seven recent issues that occurred between hospitals, health systems and payors within the past month, starting with the most recent.

1. Study: Only 11% of Hospital, Physician Pay Tied to Performance
Out of all the healthcare dollars paid to hospitals and physicians from commercial payors, only 11 percent are tied to providers' performance or how well they deliver care and reduce waste, according to a report from the Catalyst for Payment Reform.

2. Report: Insurers Spent Less Than 1% of Premiums on Quality Improvement
On average, payors spent less than 1 percent of premiums on healthcare quality improvement activities in 2011, according to a report by the Commonwealth Fund.

3. UC Health, Anthem Pitted in Reimbursement Dispute
UC Health and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio have until April 15 to reach a new reimbursement contract, or thousands of Anthem members will become out-of-network for the Cincinnati-based health system.

4. Novant Health, Cigna Ink ACO Deal
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health and Cigna launched a collaborative accountable care initiative, effective April 1.

5. Medicare ACO Results Expected This Summer
Richard Gilfillan, MD, director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, said more "telling evidence" about CMMI models, including accountable care organizations, would be available this summer.

6. Michigan Blue Cross to Become Taxable Non-Profit Entity
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) signed a law raising the taxability of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan by millions in exchange for reducing regulatory barriers.

7. KentuckyOne Health, Coventry Reach Contract Extension
Louisville-based KentuckyOne Health and CoventryCares of Kentucky renewed their contract, which will keep all CoventryCares beneficiaries in-network with KentuckyOne providers.
