52-year-old Arkansas mental health center to close

Kelly Gooch -

An Arkansas mental health center is slated to close next month after more than 50 years in business, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Little Rock Community Mental Health Center and an associated day treatment facility will close due to healthcare structural changes that have resulted in unsustainable administrative costs, the center's executive director Thomas Grunden told the newspaper. The closure is scheduled for Sept. 23.

According to Mr. Grunden, the closure will affect 65 employees and contractors, many of whom have taken other positions. He anticipates that some teams will join the Centers for Youth and Families, which provides specialized prevention, intervention and treatment services.

Little Rock Community Mental Health Center is a nonprofit behavioral healthcare organization. Its website states it was initially organized by the Arkansas State Hospital  in 1967 as the Greater Little Rock Community Mental Health Center and was renamed in 1993.
