25 largest gifts to healthcare organizations in 2018

Here are the top 25 gifts and pledges to hospitals or healthcare organizations to date in 2018.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy maintains a database of gifts of $1 million or more made by individuals to various charitable institutions.

This list includes gifts under "health" and "medical research" by The Chronicle of Philanthropy and those reported by Becker's Hospital Review. Please note that many of the gifts are of equal value.

1. $200 million to Mayo Clinic School of Medicine (Rochester, Minn.)
Donor: Jay Alix, founder of AlixPartners, a global consulting firm best known for its work in the turnarounds.
Details: The donation will help expand scholarship opportunities and establish a professorship and further innovation in the school's curriculum.

2. $200 million to Harvard Medical School (Boston)
Donor: Blavatnik Family Foundation, a foundation established by Len Blavatnik, a British-American businessman and investor.
Details: The gift will advance research, train new scientists and support a therapeutics initiative to accelerate the pace of novel treatment discovery.

3. $150 million to Michigan Medicine (Ann Arbor)
Donors: Richard and Susan Rogel. Mr. Rogel is president of the investing firm Tomay Inc. and founder and former chairman and CEO of the Preferred Provider Organization of Michigan.
Details: The donation will go toward the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center to support research, provide scholarships for students and train cancer researchers.

4. $120 million to University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (Aurora)
Donor: Anschutz Foundation, which supports Colorado nonprofit organizations focused on improving lives
Details: The gift will fund faculty recruitment initiatives, research opportunities and the construction of a new health science building.

5. $60 million to Seattle Children's Hospital
Donor: Bruce Leven, the founder of Bayside Automotive Group, who died in September 2017.
Details: The bequest will endow a fund that pays hospital costs for low-income families who can't afford treatment.

6. $50 million to Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)
Donors: Lester and Sue Smith. Mr. Smith founded the Smith Energy Company and Ms. Smith founded an interior design company.
Details: The gift will help fund a new building to house the heart, intensive care and surgery spaces at the hospital. In addition, it will help support patient care and advance research.

7. $50 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles)
Donor: The Smidt Foundation. Eric Smidt is the president of Harbor Freight Tools, a tool retailer in California.
Details: The gift will establish the Smidt Heart Institute, helping the hospital expand research and treatment of  heart conditions.

8. $50 million to Boston Children's Hospital
Donors: Robert Hale Jr. and Karen Hale. Mr. Hale is the CEO of Granite Telecommunications.
Details: The gift will help support a building that will house a heart center and special unit for newborns.

9. $50 million Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston)
Donors: Robert Hale Jr. and Karen Hale. Mr. Hale is the CEO of Granite Telecommunications.
Details: The hospital will use the gift to support its building for transformative medicine, which will be named after the couple.

10. $50 million to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.)
Donor: AbbVie, pharmaceutical company
Details: The donation will support the construction of a family commons on the hospital's campus, the first facility of its kind at St. Jude. It is designed to be a treatment-free floor that will help families heal and relax.

11. $50 million to Mercy Ships (Garden Valley, Texas)
Donor: Harry and Linda Fath. Mr. Fath is a lawyer and owner of Fath Properties, which manages 30 apartment buildings.
Details: The donation will help Mercy Ships, which operates the largest nongovernmental hospital ship in the world, build a second floating hospital.

12. $34 million to University of Oklahoma College of Medicine (Norman)
Donor: Harold Hamm Foundation. Harold Hamm founded Continental Resources, an oil and natural gas production company in Oklahoma.
Details: The donation will support research initiatives at the medical school's diabetes center.

13. $30 million to Cleveland Clinic
Donors: Ronald and Terri Weinberg. Mr. Weinberg is the director and principal of Weinberg Capital Group, which manages investments and operates private companies in Ohio.
Details: The gift will support Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, which is home to all laboratory-based translational and clinical research at the health system.

14. $25 million to University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore)
Donors: Leonard and Roslyn Stoler. Mr. Stoler founded the Len Stoler Automotive Group, operating car dealerships in Baltimore and New York.
Details: The donation will support construction of the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

15. $25 million to Mayo Clinic School of Medicine-Scottsdale (Ariz.)
Donors: William and Carolyn Franke. Mr. Franke is the managing partner of Indigo Partners, a private equity firm.
Details: The donation will expand access to scholarships, faculty development initiatives and fund new education programs.

16. $25 million to Northwestern Medicine (Chicago)
Donor: Bluhm Family Charitable Foundation. Neil Bluhm co-founded JMB Realty Corp., a real estate investment firm in Chicago.
Details: The gift will develop artificial intelligence that aims to improve cardiovascular care at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.

17. $25 million to Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital
Donor: Bay Branch Foundation, founded by Elaine Wold, an heiress to the Johnson & Johnson family fortune.
Details: The hospital will use the donation to fund renovations and expansions at the facility.

18. $25 million to Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (Houston)
Donor: Fayez and Susan Sarofim. Mr. Sarofim founded Fayez Sarofim & Co., a Houston investment-management firm.
Details: The donation will fund health system renovations and expansions.

19. $21 million to Good Samaritan Hospital (Los Angeles)
Donor: Charles Munger, vice chairman of investment company Berkshire Hathaway.
Details: The gift will pay for the hospital's emergency department expansion and help fund a project to update the building.

20. $20 million to Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston)
Donor: Sean Healey, chairman and CEO of Affiliated Managers Group, an asset-management firm in Florida. His company matched his gift with another $20 million.
Details: The gift will advance scientific research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the Sean Healey and AMG Center for ALS.

21. $20 million to Seattle Children's Hospital
Donors: Ballmer Group (Steve and Connie Ballmer). Mr. Ballmer is the former CEO of Microsoft.
Details: The donation will support the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic, which provides medical, dental, mental health and nutrition services to low-income families.

22. $20 million to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (Stanford, Calif.)
Donors: Tad and Dianne Taube. Mr. Taube is the founder of Woodmont Companies, a real estate investment firm.
Details: The donation will fund construction of a  building that will house operating rooms, imaging suites and child-friendly intensive care units.

23. $20 million to Valley Hospital Foundation (Ridgewood, N.J.)

Details: The donation will fund a new hospital in Paramus, N.J.

24. $20 million to Children's Hospital-Los Angeles
Donor: Anonymous
Details: The donation will fund the hospital's emergency department renovation, buy new equipment and hire more staff.

25. $20 million to Henry Ford Health System (Detroit)
Donor: Anonymous
Details: The donation will establish the Henry Ford Pancreatic Cancer Center and create a global research consortium focused on early detection, research and precision medicine.
