10 states with highest, lowest 2017 employer healthcare spending

Alaska saw the highest average annual healthcare spending for individuals with employer-sponsored insurance in 2017, while Hawaii saw the lowest, according to an interactive state tool from the Health Care Cost Institute.

The tool is a companion to the institute's annual healthcare cost and utilization report, which examined the institute's commercial claims database on more than 40 million Americans under 65 covered by employer-sponsored health plans. It provides a state-by-state breakdown of per-person healthcare spending for medical services and prescription drugs. Spending numbers do not include manufacturer rebates for drugs.

Ten states with the highest per-person healthcare spending in 2017 based on the tool:

1. Alaska: $7,469

2. West Virginia: $6,813

3. South Dakota: $6,733

4. New Hampshire: $6,720

5. Wyoming: $6,695

6. New Jersey: $6,402

7.  Wisconsin: $6,355

8. New York: $6,335

9. South Carolina: $6,233

10. Connecticut: $6,232

Ten states with the lowest per-person healthcare spending in 2017:

1. Hawaii: $3,626

2. Utah: $4,499

3. Arkansas: $4,608

4. Kansas: $4,887

5. Maryland: $4,919

6. Michigan: $4,961

7. Arizona: $4,962

8. Nevada: $5,028

9. Alabama: $5,031

10. Oregon: $5,112
