10 Hospitals Join Program to Test Link Between Costs, Clinical Variation

Staff -
Ten hospitals and health systems have joined a pilot program organized by VHA to determine how variations in supplies and clinical practice affect healthcare costs and patient outcomes.

Officials at VHA, a supply chain network with more than 1,350 non-profit hospitals, said the participating providers will use various measures to look at their cost and utilization data. The participants will then partner with physicians on cost-reduction strategies based on clinical best practices.

The 10 organizations participating in the pilot program are:

•    Altru Health System in Grand Forks, N.D.
•    Beaver Dam (Wis.) Community Hospitals
•    CentraCare Health System in St. Cloud, Minn.

•    NCH Healthcare System in Naples, Fla.
•    Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minn.
•    Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
•    St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, Mont.
