Pittsburgh-based UPMC Mercy will end its obstetrics services, neonatal ICU and inpatient women's care in early March, moving them to UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, also in Pittsburgh.
Magee-Women's is home of the largest NICU in Pennsylvania, treating nearly 2,000 critically ill infants per year. If a woman with an obstetric emergency comes to Mercy's ER after the transition, the clinical team will provide care as needed and assess if a transfer to Magee-Women's is necessary.
"Concentrating UPMC's local obstetric services at Magee, which is less than 2 miles away from Mercy and is one of the nation’s premier women's specialty hospitals, is a prudent use of organizational resources," said Michael Grace, president of UPMC Mercy.
