UPMC Hamot breaks ground on $111M patient tower

Alia Paavola -

Erie, Pa.-based UPMC Hamot broke ground on the largest construction project in its 135-year history — a $111 million patient care tower, according to GoErie.com.

The new seven-story patient tower will be located at the site of the former UPMC Hamot Professional Building, which was demolished.

The tower will house two floors of intensive care unit rooms and space for the hospital's emergency department and medical imaging services. The new ICU will have 64 beds, which increases the unit's capacity by 20 beds.

Construction is expected to wrap up in December 2020. The building will open to patients in 2021, according to Erie News Now.
