Baltimore-based University of Maryland Health System broke ground Thursday on its $543 million replacement hospital for Prince George County.
The new 11-story, 595,744-square-foot hospital — which will be named University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center — will have 205 acute-care beds, 20 observation rooms, 45 emergency room treatment bays and eight operating rooms. In addition, there will be 15 beds dedicated to specialty pediatric care.
Upon completion, the new facility will replace the current University of Maryland Prince George's HospitalCenter in Cheverly, Md. The new CapitalRegionMedicalCenter will be located about 10 miles away in Largo, Md.
The hospital is expected to open in March 2021.
