Unidentified health system to invest $1B into Indiana medical complex

An unidentified health system plans to invest upwards of $1 billion into a medical complex that houses an inpatient hospital and medical offices in Carmel, Ind., reports the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Local residents, who were sent a letter asking to sell their homes to make room for the proposed complex, told the Indianapolis Business Journal that Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health is behind the project. However, a St. Vincent spokesperson declined to confirm.

Supporting residents' speculations, St. Vincent recently signed a master lease for a five-story, 187,000-square-foot building adjacent to the proposed site and revealed plans to remodel the site.

Ambrose and Sexton Development, a real estate agency, filed a rezoning request to Carmel officials and partnered with Bremner Real Estate to buy 13 homes in a subdivision just west of the proposed project location. The proposal Ambrose and Sexton submitted to the city features a medical complex straddling a road that will feature nine buildings and four parking garages.

In the letter to homeowners, obtained by the Indianapolis Business Journal, the Bremner Real Estate agency says the medical complex project will cost "upwards of $1 billion."

"We are engaged by a major health system to plan, develop, and construct a large inpatient hospital, supporting medical office buildings, and parking structures," the letter to homeowners reads. "The new medical campus will enable our client to provide service excellence and innovative care for the surrounding communities."

St. Vincent's primary hospital is about three miles west of the proposed new location, and it is not clear if services would continue at the current flagship facility. In addition, St. Vincent has several facilities in Carmel, including its inpatient facility, St. Vincent Carmel Hospital, a heart hospital and walk-in clinics.

Spokespeople from Ambrose and Sexton, St. Vincent and the Carmel Mayor's office did not respond to the Indianapolis Business Journal's request for details on the project.
