UMMC breaks ground on $180M children's hospital expansion

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is constructing a facility next to Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Miss., the state's only pediatric hospital, according to a MPB report.

The 340,000-square-foot children's tower will cost $180 million. The tower will include upgraded operating rooms, intensive care units and imaging services specialized for pediatric patients.

The 130-bed hospital has seen a great need to upgrade and expand services, said Mary B. Taylor, MD, pediatric specialist at UMMC. "We see probably about 90,000 children a year. We have about 45,000 or so visits to the emergency department, for example, every year and 1,700 admissions or so to the intensive care unit."

The facility is scheduled to open in summer 2020.
