West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health will unveil a new pediatric emergency department at Reading (Pa.) Hospital during a private open house Feb. 5.

The pediatric ED will open to the public Feb. 7. The facility will include 16 rooms designed for pediatric patients, a specialized pediatric triage area and a family-friendly waiting room with interactive screens and games. The ED will also offer accommodations for children with special needs.

Reading Hospital treats nearly 30,000 pediatric ED patients annually. The hospital spent two years planning for the new ED, soliciting input from community members to learn what features would most benefit children and parents.

"Our vision is to provide outstanding care to children in an environment that reduces stress and anxiety for patients and their families," Charles Barbera, MD, chair of Reading Hospital's department of emergency medicine, said in a press release. "Our new pediatric emergency department offers warm, compassionate, specialized pediatric care in a friendly setting that welcomes children and will help them heal."
