Massachusetts General plans $1B expansion

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital will spend over $1 billion to expand its campus by an additional 1 million square feet, according to The Boston Globe.

The expansion would include two connected 12-story towers that would house a heart center, a cancer center, operating rooms and private patient rooms. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

The additions will be built on land the hospital already owns. The project requires approval from the Boston Planning and Development Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Health Policy Commission.

"If this region wants a world-class academic medical center like [Massachusetts General Hospital], we have to renew our campus and keep it modern and terrific for our patients and competitive, not only with local competition, but the national competition as well," said Peter Slavin, MD, president of the hospital.
